BOLIVIA, NC : Two buses from A Brunswick County elementary school were involved in the accident on Friday, October, 27th 2017
All children taken to local hospitals Friday after a Brunswick County crash involving two school buses have been released, but the driver of a third vehicle remains hospitalized.
The accident happened just before 4 p.m. Friday at the intersection of N.C. 211 and Hewettown Road. Trooper T.W. Inman of the N.C. Highway Patrol said one of the school struck a pick-up truck, causing it to rear-end the second school bus. Buses 251 and 253 from Williamson Elementary School were involved in the crash, according to Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki. At the time, 64 children were on the two buses.
Brunswick County Schools posted on social media late Friday night that all 26 students treated after the crash were back home -- initially the school district reported that 28 had been hospitalized. The children were taken to two hospitals in the region, and Inman said all of their injuries were minor.
However the driver of the pick-up truck, who has not been identified, remained at New Hanover Regional Medical Center late Saturday. Inman did not know his condition.
Inman said charges are possible against one of the school bus drivers, but he needs to review video of the crash.
A post on Brunswick County Schools’ Facebook page thanked law enforcement for their handling of the incident.
“We are grateful for the prayers of our community,” the post read. “We are so appreciative for the first responders, school staff, law enforcement and medical staff that worked seamlessly together today.”
