One man is dead and three other people are critically injured following a crash near Wall Lake in Hartford.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Swenson says a 19-year-old man was driving the wrong way around 8:30 p.m. Friday on Highway 42 north of Wall Lake when he collided head-on with a car driven by a 39-year-old man.

Swenson says the older man was pronounced dead at the scene. The man's 12- and 9-year-old daughters along with the wrong-way driver were taken to Sioux Falls hospitals in critical condition.

Swenson says it was not immediately clear why the driver was heading the wrong way. At least two people had to be extricated from the vehicles.

The names of the four people involved in the crash have not been released.
