Carbondale,CO : Teen killed in car crash outside of Carbondale on may, Monday 15th 2017
A 17-year-old was killed in a car accident Sunday night that sent five other passengers to the hospital, some with serious injuries, authorities said Monday.
Ayleen Ruiz Alvarado of Carbondale was identified as the deceased victim by the Garfield County Coroner's Office.
The accident on state road 108, also called North Thompson Creek Road, was reported to the Colorado State Patrol around 9:40, said trooper Nate Reid.
He said Alvarado was ejected and was, like the other occupants of the 1999 Audi sedan, not wearing a seat belt. He identified the driver as Gerardo Banda, 19, of Basalt, who was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Banda was apparently trying to pass another vehicle when he went off the left side of the road and up an embankment, where it began to overturn. The car came back and rolled across off the width of the roadway and went off the road's right side. It vaulted off a ravine while it was rolling, and came to rest at the bottom of the ravine, Reid said.
Alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor, he said, adding he didn't know whether Banda was still in the hospital Monday afternoon. An autopsy was scheduled for today. The manner of death is being investigated as an accident
