Two police officers and two children were among six hurt in a Wednesday morning crash in Northeast Baltimore, police said. A department spokesman said the officers were responding to an emergency call just before 10 a.m. when the collision occurred, at the intersection of Frankford and Plainfield avenues in the Frankford neighborhood. Based on where the vehicles came to rest, the police vehicle appeared to have gone past a stop sign on Plainfield when the crash occurred. The other vehicle involved, an SUV, was driving along Frankford at the time, which did not have a stop sign at that intersection. Neighbors said they did not hear sirens, but heard a few seconds of squealing tires and then a loud crash. The police vehicle sustained heavy damage to the front of the vehicle, including a smashed windshield on the driver's side, while the driver's side door of the SUV had to be completely removed. Neighbors who came outside after the crash said they saw a young child motionless as he or she was carried out of the car. Police said the officers were in "serious" condition and did not provide a specific condition for the citizens who were in the SUV except to say that their injuries were not life-threatening. Neighbors said that the intersection often is a scene of vehicle accidents, and said there should be a four-way stop. Councilman Brandon Scott, who visited the scene, noted that the city recently installed a traffic signal one block away on Frankford in response to complaints about speeding.
