Zionsville, IN : Trooper injured in I-865 crash on Wednesday, August 30, 2017
An Indiana State Police trooper who was struck by a car on I-865 Wednesday morning is in serious but stable condition.
Trooper Ronneal Williams had pulled over a van near the 4 mile marker of I-865 east for a traffic stop, according to an ISP press release.
Williams was standing on the passenger side of the van when a car driven by Ramon Michel Jr., 19, of Indianapolis, veered onto the shoulder and hit the back of Williams’ police cruiser, according to the release. The impact caused the cruiser to hit the back of the van, which hit Williams and sent him over the guardrail, according to the release.
Williams, a five-year ISP veteran, was able to use his radio to call for help, according to the release. He was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital. He was alert and conscious after the accident, ISP spokesman Sgt. John Perrine wrote on Twitter.
Investigators remain on scene and are working to find the reason Michel veered onto the shoulder, according to the release.
Williams remains at the hospital in “serious but stable” condition, according to the release. The extent of the injuries suffered by the other drivers is unknown, the release stated, though they are believed to be nonfatal.
Law enforcement shut down I-865 near the I-65 interchange on Wednesday morning while investigators examined the wreck site.
