Douglas, WY : Rider on Hoka Hey motorcycle run falls asleep, crashes, dies on Saturday, 25th April, 2020
A motorcycle rider on a 7,600-mile trek from Key West, Fla., to Homer, Alaska, died about 2 a.m. Saturday four miles north of Douglas, Wyo., according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The dead motorcyclist was identified as Charles C. Lynn, 44, of Sorrento, Fla.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol said it is believed that Lynn momentarily fell asleep on Interstate 25, causing his bike to veer into the median.
Lynn tried to brake and steer back on to the interstate but the bike went into a spin as it went into a drainage ditch, according to the patrol. As he hit the ditch, Lynn, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle, a 2008 Harley-Davidson.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol said Lynn was participating in the Hoka-Hey Motorcycle Run. Participants are supposed to follow a prescribed route, using primarily secondary roads and highways, said the patrol.
For a $1,000 entry fee, the riders are “gambling for $500,000 in Alaskan gold,” the patrol said in a press release.
