LAPEER COUNTY, MI : Car crosses median of I-69, causing deadly crash near Lapeer on Wednesday, 13th March 2024
A Lapeer man died after police say his car crossed the median of I-69 and slammed head-on into an SUV near Lapeer on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office says 31-year-old Derek Hockin of Lapeer was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze west on I-69 near Lake Nepessing Road in Elba Township around 4:50 p.m. when he went off into the median.
He ended up driving all the way through the grassy median into the eastbound lanes, where he slammed head-on into a 2011 Ford Explorer.
The Elba Township Fire Department extricated both Hockin and the 22-year-old woman from Lapeer, who was driving the Explorer. Hockin was pronounced dead at the scene.
