Norwalk,CA : Monterey Park policeman killed in fatal 605 Freeway rollover crash on August, Monday 14th 2017

A Monterey Park policeman was killed Monday morning in a rollover crash on the 605 Freeway in Norwalk, authorities said.

The single-vehicle crash was reported at 5:28 a.m. on the northbound 605 just south of Firestone Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

A witness observed Carrillo driving in the carpool lane at normal freeway speeds when, for unexplained reasons, he veered into the center divider wall and then overturned, according to a CHP statement.

Carrillo was ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway and was killed, the CHP statement said.

CHP continues to investigate the collision, the statement said.

Carrillo, 36, of Montebello had been with the Monterey Park Police Department since 2015, according to a statement from the city of Monterey Park. He was off-duty at the time, the statement said.

“His loss has deeply affected the department personnel and he will be missed by all members of the police department and by fellow Monterey Park city employees,” said City Manager Ron Bow and Police Chief Jim Smith in a joint statement.

A SigAlert was issued at 5:40 a.m. shutting down all northbound lanes of the 605 at the 105 Freeway. Two lanes were reopened shortly after 6 a.m., the CHP reported.
