Payne County, OK : Two Guthrie Public Schools teachers are dead after an accident on Monday morning October 27th 2014
Two Guthrie Public Schools teachers are dead after an accident just after 7 a.m. Monday, six miles west of Perkins.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol report says a 37-year-old man from Choctaw, Rocky Baca, was driving a 2010 Dodge Van eastbound in the westbound lanes on State Highway 33.
The second vehicle, a 2012 Ford Focus occupied by Jennifer Briggs, 24, and Heather Wilson, 27, attempted to swerve to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but was unsuccessful.
The OHP says Briggs and Wilson were pinned in the vehicle and died on scene from multiple injuries.
Briggs taught 7th grade English at Guthrie Junior High School. Wilson taught 8th grade English. Both graduated from Oklahoma State University. The two lived in Stillwater and carpooled to work each day, a press release from the district said.
"This has hit our Junior High staff and students especially hard and we are thankful for the outpouring of support," said Guthrie Public Schools superintendent Mike Simpson. "These were two rising stars in education who in their short time touched many lives. I have spoken with the families of both teachers to offer our condolences and support. We will get through this tragedy but for now we are grieving our loss."
Parent-teacher conferences at the Junior High building scheduled for tonight have been canceled. School counselors from the district are on hand to assist students and staff.
Baca was transported to OU Medical Center in serious condition. The condition of Baca is under investigation, according to the OHP report.
