Lowell, MA : Man charged with deadly hit and run in Lowell on June 12th 2014
A 21-year-old Lowell man has been charged in connection with a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run that took the life of an 86-year-old man.
Hector Caustrita was released on $1,500 bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death in connection with the June 4 death of Elmer Mortensen.
Police say Caustrita struck Mortensen with his car as the victim was crossing a street in a crosswalk after dark, got out of his car, walked over to the body, swore, and then drove away.
The suspect hired a lawyer the day after the death. That attorney negotiated with police for Caustrita to turn himself in Thursday.
His lawyer says his client is not a flight risk and has a supportive family.
