San Diego, CA : Driver's mother, child die after DUI hit-run crash on Interstate 15 near Mira Mesa Saturday, September 10, 2016
A woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter were killed in an early-morning collision on Interstate 15 near Mira Mesa Saturday and a Vista man was arrested later in connection with the crash, California Highway Patrol said.
Grant Thoren, 31, was taken into custody at his home and booked on charges including two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and driving under the influence of drugs, authorities said.
The names of the 64-year-old woman and the grandchild who died were not released. The woman's daughter, age 35, and second granddaughter, age 5, were hospitalized with major injuries, the CHP said.
Their silver Honda Accord, carrying the three generations of family, was heading south about 1:45 a.m. when it was hit by the first of two vehicles near Mercy Road. A silver Cadillac CTS rear-ended the Honda, stopped briefly, then kept going, CHP Officer Mary Bailey said.
The Honda bounced off the center divider and stalled in traffic lanes. An Arizona man driving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup then slammed into the Honda. He stopped after the collision, Bailey said.
The Honda driver, from Temecula, and her older daughter were taken to hospitals, as was a 24-year-old female passenger in the Tacoma, who complained of pain, Bailey said. The Honda driver's mother, from Fairfield in the Bay Area, and younger daughter died in the second crash.
Several hours later, a tow truck driver who heard news of the hit-and-run crash involving a silver Cadillac called the CHP to report having towed a car like that. The driver had stopped at another exit off I-15 and had the Cadillac towed to his Vista home. CHP officers arrested Thoren about 7:15 a.m., Bailey said.
