One teen was killed and one transported to the hospital after a one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning on Bumpass Road south of Liberty.
Evan Deforge, 17, of Pleasant Garden, was traveling south on Bumpass Road when the 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck he was driving ran off the road to the right. According to First Sgt. S.M. Passenger Colby Haithcock, 16, of Franklinville, died at the scene. Deforge was taken to The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. The family has requested that Deforge’s condition remain confidential, Doug Allred, external communications manager for the hospital, said Monday morning. Neither teen was wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred.
The teens were students at Providence Grove High School. According to Tim Moody, Randolph County School System public information officer, two ASSIST Teams, composed of student advocates, social workers, nurses, counselors and psychologists, were at the school Monday to support students and staff.
The primary investigator for the accident was Master Trooper K.Y. Britt. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, which is in process.
