Okemos, MI : Two children still critical after 6-vehicle crash on I-96 in Ingham County on Wednesday, July 6, 2016
Two children remained in critical condition today, a day after a crash involving a semi truck caused police to close westbound Interstate 96 for about five hours.
The children, a 17-month-old boy and 5-year-old boy, were in one of the five passenger vehicles involved in the chain-reaction collision around 5 p.m. near the Okemos rest area, Ingham County Sheriff's officials said.
Police had already responded to a one-car, rollover crash just west of the rest area when they heard reports of a second collision about one-eighth of a mile to the east, sheriff's officials said.
A semi truck rear-ended a vehicle that was slowing because of the first crash, starting a chain-reaction collision involving four other vehicles, the officials said.
Twelve people reported being injured, eight of whom were taken to area hospitals, Detective Sgt. Greg Harris said. Only the children suffered life-threatening injuries, he said.
The truck driver was not injured.
The Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team is helping the sheriff's department with the investigation. Sheriff's officials said the report will be sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review. They did not say if they expect to seek criminal charges.
