Birmingham man, Irondale teen killed in crash in Alabama

Birmingham man and an Irondale teen were the two people killed in Wednesday's horrific crash on Interstate 65.Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Phillip Russell identified the victims as Mark Nelms, 50, and Alexander Tombrello, 18.

The crash happened at 3:37 p.m. when a pickup truck on I-65 south clipped another truck, lost control and flipped over the median, landing on a van traveling northbound.

When rescue workers arrived, Nelms was pinned behind the wheel of the van. He was extricated from the van and pronounced dead on the scene.
Tombrello, authorities said, was in the pickup truck that lost control.

Two other people in the pickup were injured: a male who was thrown from the van and another male who was trapped inside the pickup truck. Their conditions are unavailable at this time.

Authorities have not released the names of those injured.
