Dozens of people have been injured, six critically, after a bus rollover on Interstate 95 northbound in Madison Monday afternoon.
State police in Westbrook confirmed to News 8 that the bus rolled over on I-95 north in Madison, between exits 60 and 61 at 12:28 p.m. The State DOT reported that the northbound side of the highway was closed in that area.
Multiple ambulances across the shoreline responded to the scene, as well as area fire departments.
State Police tell News 8 the Dahlia tour bus had about 70 passengers on board. Approximately 30 of those passengers were able to walk off the bus of their own power. The Day of New London reported the bus was bound for Mohegan Sun. The windshield was removed by emergency responders to get passengers out of the bus.
Injured people were taken to Yale Trauma Center in New Haven. Hospital officials told News 8 that were expecting 30-40 people to be admitted, with six of them in critical condition. A hospital spokesperson said that it took ambulances much longer than normal to get the critically injured people to the hospital due to poor driving conditions.
Passengers that were not injured were taken to a warming center at the Town Gym in Madison.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Gov. Malloy said,Spokespeople at Yale-New Haven Hospital tell News 8 that they train for “Major Trauma Events” like this crash five to six times per year. The hospital is prepared using techniques they have trained for in mass casualty situations.
Interstate 95 northbound was reopened just before 5:00 p.m. Monday evening.
