PHOENIX, AZ : At least one person dead after crash on SR 87 in Gila River Community on Thursday, 7th September 2023

A deadly collision on State Route 87 closed the road on the Gila River Reservation Thursday night. Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the two-vehicle collision happened just before 7 p.m. south of the Gilbert Road intersection.

According to DPS, an SUV was heading southbound on SR 87 near milepost 155 in Sacaton when it crossed the center line into northbound traffic and collided head-on with a commercial truck. The impact was enough to cause the truck to roll onto its side, and both vehicles caught fire. While the truck driver was able to escape, the driver of the SUV was trapped and died at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified.

Arizona’s Family News chopper flew over the scene and found whisps of smoke still lingering in the air from the fire that broke out after the wreck.
