Cocke County , TN : Driver Killed and two childre were Seriously Injured while riding by vehicle in Cocke County on Tuesday morning , December 9th 2014
A Greenville, South Carolina man died early this morning and two young children were critically injured when the vehicle in which they were riding on Interstate 40 in Cocke County left the roadway and plunged to a roadway under the interstate.
Trooper Erik Raines said the 12:46 a.m. incident occurred at the Hartford exit near the 447 mile marker of the interstate.
He said Scott Hartman, 37, was westbound in a 2008 Saturn Outlook when the SUV left the roadway on the right, struck the end of the guardrail, went over the guardrail and traveled down a grassy covered area before going airborne off the embankment and across Big Creek Road. The car landed on the front-end, and flipped several times, coming to rest on its wheels.
“Both the driver and the 5-year-old child were ejected and the 4-year-old crawled from the vehicle after it came to a stop,” the trooper said.
Hartman died at the scene and both children were flown by medical helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. At last report, both were in critical condition.
Raines said the occupants were not restrained.
A truck driver following behind the vehicle saw it disappear from view, and upon arrival at the exit, observed the SUV lying on the roadway below the overpass.
