Bruce Wood, an active duty firefighter for the Halifax Fire Department, was driving on Main Street just north of the Carver town line when a truck driving in the opposite direction drifted into oncoming traffic and hit Wood's truck, killing him.
Halifax Fire Chief Jason Viveiros said Wood also served as the Fire Department's chaplain.
Wood also worked another job as a postal carrier, and was driving his route when the crash occurred.
Those who worked with Wood said he was relentlessly upbeat.
"He was a very happy and upbeat individual, he was very positive and a pleasure to be around," said Halifax Fire Captain Jeff Cuozzo.
Cuozzo said it was a blow to the entire department to learn of Wood's death.
"You just don't expect that phone call, no matter who it is, but especially someone like Bruce who's been a member of this department for so long," Cuozzo said. "It's very shocking and disturbing."
