SUMTER COUNTY, FL : Deadly Sumter County crash leaves 2-month-old in critical condition on Saturday, 1st December 2018

A 2-month-old child was left with critical injuries after a crash in Sumter County that killed his mother and injured another driver.

Authorities said Cassandra French, 24, was driving south on U.S. 301, south of County Road 720, when she traveled off the roadway and onto the shoulder.Troopers said French overcorrected and ended up in the northbound lane, nearly colliding head-on with another vehicle driven by 34-year-old Melissa Tobey.

French was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 2-month-old child who was with her sustained critical injuries.

Tobey and the child were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital. Tobey is in serious condition.

Authorities said the crash was not alcohol-related.
