Yuma, AZ : Mother and her 4-year-old daughter injured after the vehicle crashed into a canal and landed upside down in the water on Tuesday, May 17, 2016

A mother and her 4-year-old daughter were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation on Tuesday after the vehicle they were in crashed into a canal.

According to Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department Chief Paul De Anda, the accident happened at approximately 1:28 p.m. at County 17th Street and Avenue G.

Upon their arrival on scene, De Anda said firefighters found two patients standing on the side of Avenue G, wet and shaken up.

De Anda said the woman told SCFD she had been driving southbound on Avenue G in a Ford Expedition, when the vehicle experienced a mechanical failure of the rear passenger side axle.

The mother also told firefighters that this caused the vehicle to go out of control, strike the canal bank and roll, landing upside down in the canal.

The canal had water in it at the time, but the mother was able help her daughter out through a window opening. Once the daughter was out, a passerby broke out a window completely, allowing the mother to escape the water also.

By this time the Somerton/Cocopah firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene and evaluated the mother and her daughter, who were later transported via non-emergency traffic to YRMC.

The Yuma County Water Users had to be called in due to the vehicle creating a dam, which could potentially cause the water in the canal to backup and spill over onto Avenue G.
