FOXBORO, MA : Four people were injured in two separate crash on Saturday, December, 9th 2017
Four people were injured in two separate crashes Saturday, well before snow began to fall in the area.
In the most serious accident, a 35-year-old man was seriously injured when his disabled car was hit by a SUV in the northbound breakdown lane of Interstate 95 shortly after midnight Saturday that shut down the highway for a medical helicopter to land.
The driver of the SUV that reportedly struck a disabled 1995 Honda Civic was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
The victim, who was in the disabled vehicle, was flown to Tufts Medical Center in Boston with possible life-threatening injuries, Fire Capt. David Laracy said.
A bystander who stopped to assist the disabled driver was also injured and he was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton by a Mansfield ambulance. That man, also in his 30s, wasn’t seriously injured, Laracy said.
“The vehicle struck ended up hitting him and he was thrown,” Laracy said.
The accident caused a traffic backup for the helicopter to land on the highway.
State Police said 27-year-old Anthony DeBurgos of North Providence, RI was driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty and is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lane violations and speeding. He was released on bail and is expected to be arraigned in Wrentham District Court, Monday.
In the other crash, an adult and a young teen suffered serious injuries when the vehicle they were riding in struck a utility pole Saturday morning.
Fire Capt. Edward Noonan said both suffered serious injuries and were transported by ambulances to Providence hospitals.
The crash on West Street just at the Wrentham town line closed the roadway for more than five hours while utility crews worked to replace the shattered pole.
While the pole was shattered by the impact, for the most part police said power was not lost.
They said only power interruptions were expected to be brief when crews worked to move the power lines.
from the old pole to a new one.
Police in Wrentham also assisted by directing traffic away from the crash scene on their side of the crash, Foxboro officials said.
