CARLOTTA ,CA : Mad River man dies in collision on Highway 36 on July, Tuesday 25th 2017

Mad River resident Joseph Daniel Westcott has died after a head on crash on Highway 36.

Just before 6:00 Tuesday morning, Brandon Barnwell was driving a fully loaded logging truck heading westbound on Highway 36 just past Church Lane in Carlotta.

California Highway Patrol says that for unknown reasons, Westcott's silver Honda Civic was traveling eastbound in the oncoming lane and collided head on with the truck causing it to overturn and spill its load onto the roadway.

An EMT pronounced Westcott deceased on scene. Barnwell was transported for treatment of minor injuries.

Highway 36 was fully closed for hours while crews cleared logs and phone lines that came down in the crash before being opened to one-way controlled traffic by 10:00a.m.

Carlotta and Bridgeville fire crews responded along with California Highway Patrol, Caltrans and Calfire.
Humboldt Area CHP says this is the thirteenth traffic fatality in their jurisdiction this year and the second on Highway 36.
