Three loggers died on their way to work when the truck they were in crashed in heavy fog Tuesday morning, rolling 300 feet down a steep hillside, Oregon State Police said.
The crash killed the driver - Alejandro B. Cambray, 36, of Eugene - and two passengers: Ruben M. Benito, 26, and Bradley D. Yonker, 41, both of Springfield. Police said it appears neither Benito nor Yonker was wearing a seatbelt.
Two passengers survived: Armando Salgado-Gomez, 25, and Jose Guiterrez-Gomez, 23, both of Springfield.
The two men walked back up to the roadway and summoned help after the crash, police said.
Oregon State Police said the crash happened on a Bureau of Land Management road off of Siuslaw River Road on private timber land owned by Roseburg Forest Products.
Cambray was driving the white 2005 Ford F-350 pickup truck southbound in heavy fog when it left the roadway, striking an embankment and rolling 300' down a steep ravine.
Investigators said the men in the truck worked together for Kelley Brothers Inc., a Veneta based logging company. They were heading to work at the time of the crash.
State police were assisted by the Lane County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team, Lane Fire Authority, Western Lane Ambulance, T&M Towing, Lane County Mortuary Services and the Lane County Sheriff's Office.
