Oak Harbor, WA : 97-year-old Oak Harbor woman killed in Highway 20 on North Whidbey on Wednesday October 14 2015
A 97-year-old Oak Harbor woman was killed in an accident that forced the closure of a section of Highway 20 on North Whidbey Wednesday morning.
The Washington State Patrol reports that Edna Blackwood, an Oak Harbor resident, was driving a 1991 Honda Accord on Frostad Road and pulled onto the highway in front of an oncoming Ford pickup driven by 72-year-old John Balda, of Oak Harbor.
The pickup struck the driver’s side of the Honda, which was totaled.
The accident was reported at 9:06 a.m.
Blackwood died from her injuries. Balda was injured and transported to Whidbey General Hospital, according to the State Patrol report.
The drivers were both wearing seat belts. Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The section of the highway was closed while the scene was documented. Traffic was routed at detours on Jones and Frostad roads.
