Gaston County, NC : 12-year-old killed, tractor trailer driver charged in I-85 crash on Friday afternoon, June 17, 2016

A 12-year-old boy was killed and his father injured in an I-85 crash in Gaston County Friday afternoon. The driver of a tractor trailer involved in the wreck was charged with death by vehicle.

The crash happened on southbound I-85 near Exit 13 around 1 p.m. Officials said a man was driving a box truck with his son in the passenger seat when he swerved to miss a tractor trailer that was pulling off of the shoulder back into the travel lane.

The box truck reportedly struck the rear end of the tractor trailer.

Paramedics performed CPR on the 12-year-old son, but he was pronounced deceased. The boy's father was taken to an area hospital. His condition and name have not been released.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Gary Alphonso Thomas of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
