The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol are reporting a hit and run fatality of a pedestrian on Hilton Head Island.
The Sheriff’s office responded to the incident at about 1:40 a.m., Capt. Bob Bromage said Saturday. He said the incident occurred in the westbound lanes of U.S. 278 near Palmetto Parkway.
Beaufort County Coroner’s Office officials said Saturday morning that they are unable to release information on the victim as they are still working to notify next of kin
South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Eleven cyclist and pedestrians were killed in vehicle accidents in Beaufort County last year. The number was up from the annual average of four cyclist and pedestrian fatalities from 2006 through 2015.
