Culpeper, VA : Rixeyville man dies in two-vehicle crash involving a deer on Route 229 north of Sheads Mountain Road on Saturday night, November 5, 2016

A Culpeper man died Saturday night after his motorcycle struck the rear of an SUV that hit a deer.

At about 8:35 p.m., a 1998 Ford Explorer traveling south on Route 229 just north of Sheads Mountain Road hit the deer when it ran out from the right side of the road, according to the Virginia State Police.

Travis James Graham of Rixeyville was traveling south behind the SUV riding a 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle. His bike crashed into the rear of the suddenly stopped vehicle, according to state police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler.

Graham, 38, died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Tyler said.

State trooper W.C. Beard led the investigation. She was assisted by the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office. Little Fork Fire and Rescue personnel responded and aided at the scene.

Authorities enforced traffic control measures until about midnight while the investigation was underway.

Tyler stressed that drivers should use extra caution this time of year, particularly at dusk and dawn.

“Deer are on the move and hunting season has started,” he said. “Remember to keep plenty of distance between vehicles for just this type of emergency.”
