Fort Collins, CO : Bicyclist suffers serious injury in hit-and-run crash on the Mulberry Street bridge over the Cache la Poudre River on Thursday, August 25, 2016
A bicyclist was seriously injured late Thursday when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver on the Mulberry Street bridge over the Cache la Poudre River in Fort Collins.
Police arrived on scene at 11:22 p.m. and found cyclist Emily Clark, 26, lying in the left through-lane of eastbound Mulberry. Clark was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, where she remained Friday afternoon with serious injuries.
Witnesses saw a vehicle flee the scene southbound on Lemay Avenue. A short time later, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Mulberry Street and Greenfield Court, which is east of the crash site. Deputies arrived at the intersection and located an occupied 2013 Kia Rio with collision damage.
The driver of the Kia, Kenneth LeJeune, 31, was not injured. The damage appeared consistent with the bicycle collision and additional collisions with signs and other fixed objects in the area.
Friday morning, police were investigating a half-mile-long debris field of toppled signs and highway markers along eastbound Mulberry east of Summitview to Greenfield Court believed to have been caused by the suspect.
Police believe alcohol and/or drugs contributed to the collision. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
Mulberry Street was closed between Riverside and Lemay avenues for more than four hours while investigators processed the scene Thursday night and early Friday.
