Providence, RI : 74-year-old grandmother killed by hit-and-run crash on Sunday November 29 2015

A 74-year-old grandmother was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Sunday evening while crossing the street with her 31-year-old granddaughter, on Broadway near the intersection with Marshall Street, the police said.
Four hours later, the police were still seeking a newer-model, black SUV — perhaps a Cherokee or an Explorer, Providence Police Lt. Richard Fernandes said. He had no further details about the vehicle but said it would likely have front-end damage.
Both women were struck around 5:05 p.m. and were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where the grandmother was pronounced dead, Fernandes said. The younger woman was in stable condition, he said. The police were still working to notify relatives and did not release the women's names Sunday night, but Fernandes said they were both Rhode Islanders.
As the police investigated the accident in the Federal Hill neighborhood, they talked with witnesses and expected to review videotape from nearby security cameras, Fernandes said. Nearby businesses include the Jephry Floral Studio at the intersection with Broadway and Marshall, A. Tarro & Sons Funeral Home and some law offices.
The police were still investigating whether the car may have been speeding, and Fernandes said he didn't know whether the women were in a crosswalk.
When he arrived at the accident scene, Fernandes said family members of the women were arriving as well. He learned from the hospital at about 6 p.m. that the grandmother had died, he said.
