FAIR HILL, MD : A single-vehicle crash on Route 273 on Tuesday, June 6, 2017
Maryland State Police continue their investigation of a single-vehicle crash on Route 273 that killed a 70-year-old Pennsylvania man on Tuesday night.
Troopers from the North East barrack arriving at the accident scene at the intersection of Telegraph Road (Route 273) at Appleton Road around 9 p.m. Tuesday night found a 1994 GMC Jimmy SUV had crashed into concrete retaining walls still in place for construction of the roundabout there.
According to police, John Thompson, from Oxford, Pa., was traveling west on Telegraph, near the Delaware line. As he approached the intersection, investigators said Thompson appears to have failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the jersey wall, becoming trapped.
Emergency responders got the 70-year-old out of the vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is currently unknown if speed or impairing substances were a factor in the collision, police reported.
Anyone with information concerning this collision is asked to call the Maryland State Police North East Barrack at 410-996-7800.
Based on Cecil Whig records, Thompson marks the 12th person killed in traffic accidents on Cecil County highways thus far this year. That includes a 16-day stretch in April when six people were killed in five separate accidents on county roads. Four other deaths have occurred on Route 273 in two separate incidents, although not at the Appleton Road intersection.
