Asheville, North Carolina
A car crash killed a single motorist in East Asheville Sunday night, but police say the site of the wreck was not discovered for about 10 hours.
Residents of the Haw Creek community reported the sounds of what they thought was a car crash around 9 p.m. on Sunday.
But when the Asheville Police Department and Asheville Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, in the vicinity of 794 New Haw Creek Road, they found nothing.
Emergency personnel, with the assistance of neighbors, searched the area for about 15 minutes, according to a release from the Asheville Police Department.
But the vehicle involved in the crash was not found until shortly after sunrise when a neighbor spotted a vehicle over the side of an embankment and contacted authorities.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, where they found a vehicle belonging to 72-year-old Asheville resident Dolphus Koon.
He was traveling in the right hand lane heading southwest toward Asheville when he appeared to lose control of the vehicle, crossing the left hand lane and going down over the embankment, according to the release. He appears to have died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing and no further additional information is available, the APD said.
