Davis, CA : Man dies in Davis freeway crash on Interstate 80 on Wednesday, 26th December 2018

An 85-year-old man died Wednesday after crashing his vehicle during a traffic-stop attempt on Interstate 80 in Davis, according to the California Highway Patrol.Yolo County coroner’s officials identified him as Lionel John Daniel, a Sacramento resident.


According to the CHP, officers received reports at about 2 p.m. Wednesday of a hit-and-run collision at westbound Highway 50 near I-80, involving a green Ford. An officer spotted the vehicle moments later on westbound I-80 near the Webster interchange in Davis.

As the officer initiated a traffic stop, “the driver began to increase his speed and was involved in a traffic collision,” CHP Officer Rodney Fitzhugh said. “Upon witnessing the collision, officers made contact with the driver and discovered he had not been wearing his seatbelt and sustained major injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, the driver was declared deceased at the scene.
