According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Herrera was traveling south in his 1999 Audi when he attempted to pass another vehicle. He veered directly into the path of a northbound Ford Expedition driven by 22-year-old Darrell Catrett of Lithia.
Both drivers deployed evasive measures in an attempt to avoid a collision but were unable to do so. The left front side of Herrera’s Audi struck the left front side of Catrett’s Expedition.
Catrett suffered serious injuries and was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was not under the influence of alcohol the report states.
It is not yet known if Herrera was impaired and investigators do not know if he was wearing his seatbelt.
The Expedition left approximately 38 feet of skid marks at the scene. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues. The roadway was closed for several hours for the cleanup and investigation.
